Welcome Building® was never going to be a building that bolted sustainability on at the end. From the first design conversations, ESG was the foundation, shaping the brief, informing every decision, and ultimately defining what kind of workplace this could be for Bristol. Being recognised with the ESG Regional Award at the British Council for Offices South West England and Wales Awards means a great deal.
As architects, we were tasked with proving that environmental performance and exceptional workplace design don’t pull in opposite directions. The building’s connection to the Bristol Heat Network, its rooftop photovoltaics, EPC A rating, and fresh air-led ventilation strategy were integral to the design from the outset. So too were the spaces that make it genuinely human: 296 cycle spaces, end-of-trip facilities worth using, generous amenities, and a ground floor designed to bring people and the city together.
