Blocks F2 and J5 are part of the social rented accommodation offered within the Wood Wharf development at the North East of Isle of Dogs. J4 sits sits between the lock of South Dock and East Park, which forms the main public space for the predominantly residential neighbourhood at the east side of Wood Wharf.
The site for F2 was historically used for the shipping and storing of timber and the repair of ships. The design of the building has been inspired by the warehouse architectural history of the docklands. Canary Wharf Group requires that all applicable standards are met (London Housing Design Guide, Lifetime Homes, 10% Wheelchair Accessible units, Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4, Secured by design new homes standard) and efficient design solutions are proposed.
Block J5 sits north of West India Dock, where existing cranes will be retained. The proximity with the dock and the cranes has influenced the industrial design, bringing back fragments of the dockland warehouse history of the site, with dark brick and contrasting light metal balconies. The balustrade design echoes the steelwork of the nearby cranes.
Building is an individual 27 storey tower and one of a pair of buildings framing the southern view from East Park and the landscaped space on the south side of South Wharf Street. The park and its extension into the public realm between J3 and J4 are conceived as an active and animated public space which will be surrounded by mid to high rise residential buildings with active ground floor frontages and also retail pavilions at the southern end. There is also external landscaped garden to the south of J4.
